The AMRICC Centre Celebrates a Landmark Year in Advanced Ceramics

2024 has been a groundbreaking year for The AMRICC Centre, the UK’s Centre of Excellence for Advanced Ceramics, which has made significant strides in both its capabilities and its contributions to the ceramics industry. From the official opening of its new state-of-the-art facility in Stone back in February, which saw key industry players come together to support the centralisation of the AMRICC centre’s new home, to the successful installation of several cutting-edge pieces of equipment, the Centre has cemented its position as a significant hub for innovation.

A highlight of the year was the buildup to the launch of The AMRICC Academy (coming soon!), an initiative aimed at addressing the skills gap in materials science. Through partnerships with universities and top industry training providers, the Academy will offer a variety of courses designed to enhance the sector’s talent pipeline.

Continuing along this thread, AMRICC has successfully advanced its degree-level apprenticeship programme in material science to further address the skills gap in the manufacturing sector. Apprentices gain valuable science and engineering expertise through a mix of theoretical learning and hands-on experience with specialist teams. The 2024 cohort has achieved impressive success, highlighting the programme’s effectiveness in providing students with both academic knowledge and industry-relevant skills for strong career prospects.

AMRICC's facilities were also expanded with new equipment such as the Cold Isostatic Press, a large hydraulic press, and a Hot Isostatic Press, all of which enable companies to trial new products at a commercial scale. These investments in technology demonstrate AMRICC's commitment to advancing research, supporting industry collaborations, and driving the future of ceramics manufacturing in the UK.

Our yearly review document, which can be found here, highlights the continued success of the AMRICC Centre's collaborative projects, its educational initiatives, and its growing influence in the ceramics sector, positioning it as a key player in the UK's manufacturing and materials development landscape.
