Dilatometer – Precision Thermal Expansion Measurement for Advanced Materials

The Dilatometer is a high-precision instrument used to measure the thermal expansion of materials across a specified temperature range. This critical property is quantified as Percent Linear Change, calculated by measuring the change in length of a sample relative to its original length.

Technical Description

The data can be represented graphically as Temperature vs. Percent Linear Change or calculated as the Coefficient of Expansion (COE):

  • Physical COE – Measured at a single temperature point
  • Technical COE – Determined over a temperature range, providing a broader understanding of material behaviour

Our new Dilatometer delivers accurate, repeatable results, making it an essential tool for materials testing across multiple industries.

Uses and Applications

The Dilatometer plays a crucial role in industries that require precise control over material behaviour at high temperatures. Common applications include:

  • Ceramics & Glass Manufacturing – Ensuring a glaze-body fit by matching the thermal expansion of ceramic glazes and substrates, preventing defects such as crazing (glaze cracking)
  • Metallurgy & Alloy Development – Assessing expansion properties of metals to improve heat resistance and performance
  • Polymers & Composites – Studying dimensional stability under thermal cycling conditions
  • Refractory Materials – Testing high-temperature materials for industrial furnaces and kilns
  • Electronic Components – Ensuring compatibility of materials in circuit boards and microelectronic applications

Benefits of Using a Dilatometer

  • High-Accuracy Measurements – Delivers precise thermal expansion data, ensuring reliability in material development
  • Critical for Product Quality – Helps in preventing thermal stress failures by predicting material expansion behaviour
  • Versatile Testing Capabilities – Supports a wide range of materials, from ceramics and polymers to metals and composites
  • Optimised for R&D and Industrial Applications – Essential for research labs, material scientists, and manufacturers needing stringent material performance evaluations
